L’Allegoria della Vittoria e la carica degli Ussari Alati

2014

This is the allegory of Victory, merging with the figure of the Winged Hussars of Poland, the heroes of the Battle of Vienna in September 1683. The Ottomans were besieging Vienna, and the city was on the verge of collapse when the Polish King Sobieski ordered a cavalry attack by the famous “Winged Hussars” due to the winged-shaped armor they wore. The cavalry charge is the final blow. The iconography of Military Victory is surprisingly similar to that of the Winged Hussars. The predominant gold and bronze colors evoke the palette of the main artistic avant-garde born in Austria, namely the Viennese Secession, with Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele among its primary representatives.
